A useful first setup

Darith becomes accurate when your starting balances and repeating commitments are accurate. This order takes only a few minutes and avoids confusing totals later.

  1. 1
    Choose your display

Open Settings, choose a currency and theme, and optionally add a profile picture. Currency changes how amounts are shown; it does not convert money between currencies.

  2. 2
    Add your accounts

Enter the current balance of each bank or cash account. Turn off Include in monthly budget for money you only want to track.

  3. 3
    Set expected daily spending

On Overview, choose Edit beside Expected daily costs. Enter a realistic average for food, transport, and other ordinary daily spending.

  4. 4
    Add monthly plans

Add salary and other repeating income, then rent, bills, subscriptions, and other repeating expenses with their first and optional last dates.

  5. 5
    Add saving goals

Choose a monthly amount or a target amount and date. Select the bank account that will fund each goal.

  6. 6
    Record daily activity

Add income and expenses when they happen. Darith updates the selected account and recalculates the month immediately.

Best starting point

Use the balance your bank shows today. Do not add old transactions unless you also adjust the starting balance to match them.

Overview

Overview answers two different questions: what you have now, and what your plans say about the rest of the month.

Free to spend this month
Money left after Darith reserves uncovered future bills, expected daily costs for the remaining days, and saving contributions that are still due.
Extra per day
The free-to-spend amount divided by the number of days remaining, including today.
Current bank balance
The live total of bank and cash accounts that have Include in monthly budget enabled. Saving goal balances and tracking-only accounts are separate.
Month-end outlook
Current included balance plus scheduled income still due, minus scheduled expenses still due. It is a plan-based account outlook before unrecorded daily spending and unfunded goals.
Following month status
An early forecast that carries this month forward, then checks next month's repeating income, bills, daily costs, and goals.
Included balanceUncovered future billsRemaining daily costsSaving due=Free to spend
How future income is treated

Future income can cover future scheduled bills in the plan, but any extra future income does not become free-to-spend before it arrives. It does still appear in the month-end outlook.

Budget status

On track

Daily costs and this month's saving contributions are covered.

Warning

Expected daily costs are covered, but there is not enough left for all saving goals.

Out of budget

Included spendable accounts cannot cover the expected daily costs for the remaining days. Darith may suggest moving money from savings when savings can cover the gap.

The six detail figures

Current bank balance

Total across included accounts.

Income this month

Income already received plus repeating income still due.

Expenses this month

Expenses already paid plus repeating expenses still due.

Expected daily costs

Your daily estimate and its total for the remaining days.

Saving due

This month's goal contributions that have not yet been funded.

Saved in goals

Total held in active goal accounts, separate from spendable money.

Activity, reminders, and coming up

Recent transactions shows the latest entries. Coming up shows repeating income and expenses due later this month. When a goal contribution is ready, Fund your goals shows the amount and source account; Mark saved creates a real transfer into the goal.

The eye button hides financial values across the dashboard and remembers that choice for your user. The gear button opens Settings.

04

Where money lives

Accounts

Bank and cash accounts

Create an account with a name and its current balance. Income, expenses, and transfers update this balance automatically.

Included accounts

Use these for money available to your monthly budget. Their balances and connected plans affect Overview.

Tracking-only accounts

Turn off Include in monthly budget for cash, investments, or other money you want to record without changing free-to-spend or monthly forecasts.

Goal accounts

Each saving goal has its own separate balance and appears in Accounts. It is funded by transfers, not counted as spendable bank money.

Select the three-dot button on an account to rename it, correct its current balance, change its budget inclusion, or remove it. Removing a bank account keeps transaction history, but an account still used by a transfer or goal may need those links changed first.

05

What already happened

Transactions

Income

Add money that has already arrived. Choose its description, amount, date, category, and destination bank account.

Expense

Record money already spent. Darith subtracts it from the selected bank account.

Transfer

Move money between bank accounts, from a bank account to a goal, from a goal back to a bank, or between eligible accounts. The source must have enough money.

Export CSV

Download your Darith data in a spreadsheet-friendly file for your own records or analysis.

Past and future dates

Manual transactions and transfers represent completed activity, so they cannot be dated in the future. Use Monthly plans for future income and charges.

Editing and deleting

Select a transaction to edit or remove it. Editing reverses the old balance effect and applies the new values. In Settings > Behavior, choose what deletion does:

  • Update balances automatically: deleting an expense restores its amount; deleting income removes its amount; deleting a transfer restores both sides.
  • Leave balances unchanged: only the activity record is removed, and you correct account balances yourself if needed.

Deleting one posted occurrence from a repeating plan skips only that occurrence. Future months remain scheduled.

06

What should repeat

Monthly plans

Plans are for known future activity. They affect forecasts before their due date, then become normal transactions when due.

Recurring income

Add salary or other monthly income. Choose the first payment date, optional final date, category, and receiving bank account.

Recurring expenses

Add rent, bills, subscriptions, or other monthly charges. Choose the first charge date, optional final date, category, and paying bank account.

Date handling

The day in the first date becomes the monthly due day. A date such as the 31st is moved to the last valid day in shorter months.

Automatic posting

On or after the due date, Darith posts each occurrence once and updates the account. Due items are checked when the dashboard opens and can also be processed by the server's scheduled task.

Editing a plan changes future postings. Transactions already posted remain as they were. Deleting a plan stops future occurrences while keeping posted activity and its balance history.

07

Money with a purpose

Saving goals

Create a goal in one of two ways:

Ongoing goal

Enter a fixed monthly amount, such as 400 each month. Darith reserves that amount until the goal is funded.

Dated target

Enter a target amount and target date. Darith calculates the monthly contribution needed from the amount still remaining.

Also enter anything already saved, the first monthly saving date, and a default funding account. The goal then has a separate balance shown in Accounts.

How funding works

  1. A reminder shows the contribution still due for the active month.
  2. Mark saved transfers the amount from the chosen bank account into the goal immediately.
  3. On the goal's monthly date, Darith can fund it automatically when the source account has enough money.
  4. Each goal is funded at most once for a month, and the transfer appears in Activity.
Removing a goal

Move its remaining balance back to a bank account first. Darith only removes a goal account when its balance is zero, and keeps its transfer history.

08

Keep activity understandable

Categories

Income and expense categories are separate. Darith starts each user with practical defaults, and you can add, rename, or remove your own. Categories make the activity list easier to read and are included in the CSV export.

Each user's categories are private to that user. Removing a category does not remove the related transaction; the transaction remains in Activity without that category.

Make Darith yours

Settings

Appearance

Profile picture

JPEG, PNG, or WebP up to 2 MB and 1200 by 1200 pixels.

Theme

Ocean, Forest, Graphite, or Purple. The choice is saved only for your user.

Currency

EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, CAD, AUD, or Iranian Toman (IRT). This is display formatting, not currency conversion.

Status GIFs

Optionally upload one private GIF for On track, Warning, and Out of budget. Each is limited to 2 MB, 1200 by 1200 pixels, and 300 frames. A new upload replaces the previous file, and Remove GIF clears it.

Behavior

Choose whether deleting a transaction automatically reverses its effect on balances or leaves balances unchanged for manual correction.

Security

Inactivity lock

Choose Off, 1, 5, 15, or 30 minutes. Darith locks after no activity for that period.

Darith PIN

Create a 4 to 8 digit PIN for unlocking. The saved value is securely hashed rather than stored as readable digits.

Passkey

Add a passkey to unlock with your device's fingerprint, Face ID, screen lock, or security key. Passkeys require HTTPS and a supported browser.

Biometric privacy

Your device performs the biometric check. Darith receives proof that it succeeded, not your fingerprint or face data.

Before enabling inactivity lock, add at least one unlock method. Keep a working PIN or passkey before removing your last available method.

10

Control and trust

Privacy, data, and feedback

No bank credentials

Darith never asks for your online banking username, password, card number, or bank API access. You enter only the financial information you choose.

Private by user

Accounts, transactions, categories, goals, settings, profile images, and GIFs are scoped to the signed-in user. Other users cannot view them.

Limited admin screens

The normal admin interface manages usernames, email addresses, passwords, subscriptions, and submitted feedback without listing users' financial records.

Protected connection and backups

darith.app uses HTTPS for data in transit and supports encrypted database and media backups. The server operator still has technical access for maintenance; Darith is not end-to-end encrypted.

Use Export CSV when you want a portable copy of your data. Use Feedback in the dashboard to send a comment to the operator; only the message, page context, and your account identity are sent.

Ways to use Darith

Free locally or hosted online

Individuals can run Darith on their own computer for free using the local setup instructions on GitHub. Hosted access at darith.app includes a 45-day trial with no card required.

Hosted payments are manual. Pay through the listed method, report the payment from Billing, and an administrator verifies it and sets your access date. Darith does not collect payment card or bank credentials.
